GOSHEN — The former Owen Murphy Inn’s reincarnation is only a month or so away.

Passers-by might have wondered if it would ever come to pass. The Irish pub and banquet hall closed eight years ago, then stood in a semidemolished state until three years ago, when renovations were taken over by Fidencio Barajas, owner of the Hacienda restaurant a quarter-mile away on Route 17M.

The finishing touches are being applied these days on the 120,000-square-foot building.

A full-service restaurant called Valeria’s will occupy the main floor. Manager Rico Salcedo described it as a “steakhouse with a Continental flair.” It’s named for Barajas’ daughter, whose first initial and that of her brother, Jonathan, are inlaid in an upstairs floor.

A separate wing holds the Palacio Catering and Conference Center, which includes a banquet room under a newly raised ceiling lit by eight crystal chandeliers.

The building has an overall capacity of 1,050 guests.

“I got the idea for the design when I went to Spain and saw the castles there,” said Barajas, who also operates Hacienda restaurants in Highland Falls and Spring Valley. “We’re trying to get everything done by October, maybe the first week. The inside is pretty much done. Outside, the parking lot still has to be paved.”

Large catering hall needed

The opening has been eagerly awaited by Lynn Cione, executive director of the Goshen Chamber of Commerce.

“When Owen Murphy’s closed, we lost the only large catering hall in the area,” Cione said. “A large catering hall is much needed in this part of the county. And what they’ve done with the property is absolutely amazing. But that’s how they do things. When you go to the Hacienda, you see that everything is well thought out. Nothing is left to happenstance.”

The building was originally a farmhouse. The banquet hall was added to it in the 1970s. Before Owen Murphy’s, it was La Neve’s, a French restaurant, and later La Masquerade, which closed in 1998.

Hi-tech conference features

Among the new features are second-floor rooms for private dining and business meetings.

“They will be equipped with all of the technology,” Salcedo said, describing Wi-Fi and screens for PowerPoint presentations.

A veranda hugging three sides of the ground floor will provide opportunities for al fresco dining.

Beyond the veranda stretches a tile courtyard with a Spanish-themed ornamental fountain as its centerpiece. The space can also be used for cocktail hours at parties extending from the banquet room.

Salcedo said an advantage he expects the business to enjoy is its proximity to major highways. It’s within about a mile of Route 17 exits in Chester and Goshen, and roughly 10 miles from the Thruway and Route 84.

One frequent passer-by, Susan Berntsen, said she appreciates the renovations.

“It’s nice to see people putting energy and money into Orange County, and fixing things up instead of just building new,” said Berntsen, a Monroe resident who works in the area.[/jbox]

All my guests said how delicious the food was

I just had my wedding at Palacio and the staff were fantastic!! The room was absolutely beautiful and they took care of all the details. All my guests said how delicious the food was. There were tons of appetizers and so much food!!! I didn’t have to go anywhere else. I got my limo, cake and DJ all through Palacio.
We even took pictures near the gazebo surrounded by beautiful flowers. One of the things that really impressed me was how friendly everyone was to not only me and my husband but to all my guests. I highly recommend this banquet hall to anyone looking for good food, great service and reasonable prices!!

…made my husband and I feel like royalty

My husband and I recently had our wedding at Palacio in September and were very impressed with everything the facility had to offer. We had a beautiful sit down dinner that began with tons of delicious appetizers: chicken wings, stuffed breads, pizza, and the list went on and on.

The staff was Super friendly and willing to go above and beyond to make not only me, but also my guests and other family members, very happy. The room was beautifully decorated and anything I asked for was granted which made my husband and I feel like royalty on our special day. The best part about having my wedding there was that I was able to create a custom package for my budget-I could add or take away items depending on my personal taste. If anyone asks me for a reliable banquet facility I always point them to Palacio. My family and I still attend events there on a regular basis and we even plan to have another function there coming up in March. I highly recommend anyone to check it out!!!
